Desktop Organization Plan

Organize Your PC Desktop Clutter by Sal Zingale, SLZ and Associates

Some quick things you can do to organize your desktop
to streamline your work-flow.

Go to the Background Image Page

Add a My Desk Folder below your start up group. The folder will open every time you boot up your PC. Put your most common links, files, notes, etc. in the folder.

Create a to do list file and keep that in your new My Desk folder. The files, folders and links you put into your My Desk folder will all be visible and ready to use when the My Desk folder opens at boot up.

Create monthly folders on your desktop to store your files created or worked on during those months.

Keep your Desk folder and monthly folders minimized on your task bar for easy access.

Think in terms of time period when organizing your files. This system of organizing uses the My Desk folder and the current monthly folder for current operationsstorage places. In terms oftime, it is either current (today and this month) or past.

When first organizing your desktop, all current activities should be grouped and used from the My Desk folder, the current monthly folder or the desktop. Be sure to store whatever files or folders you currently have on your desktop into their monthly folders.

When organizing past records you can use monthly folders, quarterly folders or yearly folders.
It really all depends how much information and files you wish to store currently for your work and how you want to catalog the past. Spend a little time everyday organizing your past.

As you work on things on your cleaned up desktop, create project folders and keep putting the data, files, etc. in those folders. Do all of your work as much as possible just on your desktop.

When you are finished with something current from your My Desk folder, store it in your monthly folder.

If you store many images and large files and always access everything as time goes by, you may wish to consider using only one folder for all those files. As long as you know they are always stored in one location, then you will always know where to look for it, when you need it. If you store all your files by month (images, large files, etc.) remember you may be possibly copying and pasting the folder elsewhere for long term storage later on. If there are lots of huge files in the folder, it may take a long time to store.
